Tallinn Photos

Gateposts to the old town of Tallinn. Beyond the gates the architecture suddenly jumps back 5 centuries - it's stunning.

The best thing about Tallinn is wandering around the cobbled alleyways of the old town, away from the tourist hotspot of the main square. Normal people still live and work here, and it's lovely to see it *hasn't* been turned into a huge medieval theme park (yet...).

The old town is all lovely cobbled streets like this. This particular path leads up to Toompea, the fortified upper town on top of the hill.

Tallinn has lots and lots (and lots) of towers, so it's easy to get them to line up for pretty photos like this. Eeeeeeeeee.

Incredibly, the ancient city walls are almost fully intact. And very nice they are too.

The virgin's tower, which used to be a prison for prostitutes, hardly suiting the name. Nowadays it's a lovely walltop cafe with some spectacular views over the old town. A favorite haunt of mine. Mmmmmmmm.

A rooftop panorama of the old town, looking towards the Gulf of Finland.

A view of the Toompea from a tower window on the wall of the lower town. One of my 'pretentious arty shots', you see. Lacks something, I fear. Waaaah.
